Are Hwa Chong Students not 'Gentlemen' enough? [PART 2!!]
djtansg @ 11:57 PM

Hi teachers and students,

I am Tan Ding Jie from Sec 4L.

This scenario is told with all due respects to all gentlemen.

Recently, I was training the comp team at footdrill at the salt centre and then we rested. Sitting down, I prepared to debrief them.

At that moment, a HCJC girl (J1 this year, APOLLO faculty, of class 08S73, X-country as her CCA and wearing an NY tee) happened to arrive.

She appeared lost and paused at grass patch behind the amphitheatre. I went up to her and we both reached the step/seats at about the same time.

She was looking for a shortcut to the boarding school. I offered to bring her there, albeit WITHOUT the application of hand signals, and she obliged.

Just then, there were two NCOs (PROBABLY Sec 4) sitting down talking to the comp team. They exclaimed between themselves 'Wah!'. (Or something along those lines)

Seeing such actions, I am disappointed. As Hwa Chong students, trained to be gentlemen, these little acts should not be seen as awkward.

Furthermore, the school strongly encourages us to serve the ladies. Hwa Chong even goes to the extent of calling us 'gentlemen', unlike NYGH which still address them as 'girls'.

I always thought that Hwa Chong is a school that is brimming with gentlemen, but today I am duly disappointed.

Here are some suggestions that I think of:

- Start practicing to be a gentleman at home, like waiting on our mothers and sisters before meals.

- We can also practice while in school, like holding the door for our NCOs before they enter our bunks.

- For 'braver' gentlemen, you can walk up the grassy slope leading to the HCIS street soccer courts after a heavy downpour wearing nothing but flip-flops.

As you can see, I do not support PCME lessons as it only touches oursurfaces, not our hearts. So, my suggestions are to strike right into the core of our 'gentlemanliness'.

Just a charge for all of you- Unlock your 'gentlemanliness'. You do not stop being a gentleman just because your friend is standing next to you and may laugh at you.

I hope to see a more 'gentleman' Hwa Chong Institution.
